What is the difference between a living will or advance directive?

A living will is a legal document that outlines what medical providers should do for you if
you become incapacitated or unconscious and cannot make decisions for yourself.

An advance directive is more expansive and can include a living will along with a medical and financial power of attorney.

These documents are very important for people of all ages to have completed and filed with their medical providers and Montana’s End-of-Life Registry. It’s also a good idea to ensure someone you trust has a copy or at least knows where to locate your original paperwork. This is especially helpful if something happens to you and you end up being transported to a different location or hospital and they don’t have your paperwork on file.
